The diagrams delineate the transformation in the configuration of a city-centre library over a span of two decades.
In the past, the library dedicated most areas to reading activities. Upon entering, visitors were greeted by a pair of circular tables encompassed by chairs in the central foyer. To the immediate right of the entrance, a help desk was stationed, while opposite it, a section was allocated for reading newspapers and magazines. Flanking the central tables were sections assigned to fiction and ndeon-fiction books for adults. The upper right and left extremities of the structure housed children’s literature and multimedia resources (CDs, videos and computer games), respectively.
Fast forward to today, and the library has undergone a significant transformation. The erstwhile enquiry desk has given way to a newly introduced café, and the space to the left of the entrance has been refurbished as a computer lab. Notably, the centre tables have been eliminated, yielding a more expansive foyer. In addition, the area designated for children’s literature has been repurposed as a lecture hall, and the interspace between it and the new café now hosts an information centre, complemented by three self-service machines and an assortment of adult fiction literature. Particularly noteworthy is the expansion of the previous multimedia area, now accommodating storytelling events and a section for children’s books, with all reference books neatly arranged underneath. Overall, the library has seen a substantial makeover, with a number of areas expanded. It is evident that each section has been transformed to incorporate new facilities and event spaces, showcasing an increased focus on technology.
